When I grow up, I want to be Ursula.
I have loved the Little Mermaid since it was released in the UK in 1989. Even way back then I had more of a love for the villains than the princesses and this is where my love affair with Ursula began. I’ve always been more drawn to strong and vibrant characters and for me, the princesses haven’t ever been that until recently.
When I visited Disneyland Paris recently I was fortunate enough to see the display of the concept art of Ursula in the Disneyland Paris Studios. The designs varied quite greatly between artists but both myself and the friend that I was with at the time agreed that the final character was by far the best of the options.
I was pleased that the day we visited the studios was the day that I decided to wear my Ursula themed outfit with my fabulous Ursula ears from the Disney villain ear collection that was released a couple of years ago. I will do a separate post about my Disney outfits as they were a *bit* outrageous in comparison to the jeans and t shirts that majority of the other guests were wearing.
I have attended one fancy dress party as Ursula and whilst I was relatively pleased with the results at the time, I have since started working on a costume for myself that will knock my initial attempt out of the water. I have no event to go to wearing this new costume, but it was something that I wanted to make for myself and has been a work in progress for some time. I am confident that the end result will be something spectacular, my dream would be to attend a Disneyland Halloween party in it – the opportunity to wear fancy dress into the park for an evening would be my dream come true …. Sadly I still need to find that millionaire ….
I think that Ursula is somewhat of an icon in the plus sized community, she’s a strong and powerful woman that definitely embraces her curves. Who can forget that iconic “and don’t underestimate the importance of body language” wiggle during ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’ that certainly gets me cheering and wishing I had a large round voluptuous bottom instead of a thutt! She makes no apologies for who she is and is certainly a commanding presence in every scene she appears in.
I hope this goes a bit towards explaining why my Etsy store is called QueenUrsulaUK and that you can understand a bit more about my love for this amazing character.
